This Chromium (Green) Petrified Wood is one of the rarest petrified woods ever discovered. Only one truck load was unearthed near Winslow, Arizona in the 1970's and has now been dispersed to "who knows where".
By carbon dating, it has been determined to originate from the Chinle formation, Triassic era - approximately 180 million years ago. The specimen was once a conifer tree (Araucarioxylon Arizonicum) which grew to about 200 feet in height with a width of approximately 6 to 8 feet. During the fossilization process, the organic matter from this tree was replaced with the element Chromium (Cr). The agatization process resulted with in a natural mint green color.
This piece is approximately 3.5 x 2.5 inches - 201 grams. We have this as well as a number of other pieces in our collection at the shop. (not for sale) You are welcome to stop by to see the green petrified wood as well as other beautiful specimens.
