Description
Yellow calcite from Utah. Calcite is a common constituent of sedimentary rock, limestone in particular, much of which is formed from the shells of dead marine organisms. Approximately 10% of sedimentary rock is limestone. It is a most amazing and yet, most common mineral, comprising about 4% by weight of the Earth's crust and is formed in many different geological environments. With calcite so abundant and so widely distributed it is no wonder that it can be so varied. There are more than 300 crystal forms identified in calcite and these forms can combine to produce the thousand different crystal variations. The coloring of the Yellow Calcite is attributed to iron deposits in the land at the time of formation. Fun fact, the sphinx in Egypt, dating back to the 18-19th dynasty (1550 b.c.) was carved from calcite. Calcite can be found in a variety of colors, including yellow, blue, green, orange, pink, white and clear.
